For Parents

Your child has been
waiting for this.

FOCUS was built for a very specific kind of child. If you're reading this, you probably already know which one.

Is This Your Child?

The one who can't stop asking why.

They read past bedtime. They correct nature documentaries. They come home from school bursting with facts nobody asked for and can't understand why everyone isn't as amazed as they are.

They ask the second and third question when everyone else has stopped at the first. They find the natural world so astonishing that keeping it to themselves feels almost physically impossible.

They're not difficult. They're not too much. They just need a place where that kind of mind is the whole point.

That's what FOCUS is for.

"We are looking for something specific - the child who cannot help themselves, who reads when they are supposed to be sleeping, who asks the second and third question when everyone else has stopped at the first."

- Wilhelmina Euphemia Finch

What Your Child Receives

A title. A collection.
A community.

Every FOCUS Scholar receives a complete starter pack and becomes a member of the Wilhelmina Euphemia Finch Institute for Natural Discovery. Here's what that means in practice.

The Starter Pack

A natural wood collection box containing 50 species cards, 10 gameplay cards, a Field Kit tin, and a welcome card. Every pack is unique - no two Scholars receive the same collection.

Digital Membership

Each card activates at thefinchinstitute.org, revealing the full species profile, field notes, and biological data. The digital world grows alongside the physical collection.

The Fellowship

Biweekly 90-minute FOCUS sessions with a group of like-minded Scholars. Show and tell, lightning trivia, field presentations, and gameplay. The room where being obsessively curious is the whole point.

The Title

Your child becomes a FOCUS Scholar of the Institute. That's not a casual title - it's one they'll carry with pride, and one that celebrates exactly who they are.

Real Science

Every species in the collection is real, documented, and scientifically verified. The facts on every card are true. Your child isn't just collecting - they're building genuine natural history knowledge.

A Growing Collection

The collection box is sized to grow with them. Trading, expansion packs, and new species mean the archive never stops expanding - and neither does their curiosity.

The Object

Something they'll
keep forever.

The W.E.F.I.N.D. starter pack is designed to feel like something that has been waiting for your child. The wood collection box, the brass latch, the lyrebird on the lid - it's a keepsake before a single card has been opened.

Inside: 50 cards, a cream parchment welcome card reading "Welcome to the Fellowship. Stay curious. Forever." and a flat Field Kit tin for carrying cards to FOCUS sessions.

The collection box is sized to hold a full grown collection. It ships with 50 cards and room for everything that follows.

Common Questions

A few things parents ask.

What age is FOCUS designed for?

FOCUS is built for children aged 7-12. The cards, the sessions, and the gameplay are all calibrated for that range - though the curiosity it celebrates has no age limit.

How does my child join?

FOCUS runs through schools as an afterschool program. If your child's school isn't currently running FOCUS, the best way to get started is to let us know - or speak to your school's administration about bringing the program in.

Is the content age-appropriate?

Completely. Every species fact, field note, and session topic is written for curious children. The world is extraordinary enough without embellishment - and we never need to reach for anything inappropriate to make a 7-year-old's eyes go wide.

What does it cost?

FOCUS is funded through a combination of school district budgets, grants, and program fees. We work closely with districts to ensure that cost is never a barrier to the pursuit of wonder, knowledge, and curiosity. Families who need support are prioritized, and we actively pursue grant funding to expand access. If cost is a concern for your family, please reach out directly. We will always find a way to make it work for the right child.

My child has more questions. Who do they write to?

The Institute welcomes correspondence from curious minds of all ages. Get in touch - we read everything.
